SUMS Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to audition to join SUMS?

Nope! SUMS is a non-auditioned choir. Everyone is welcome, regardless of experience.

Do I have to be a USYD student to sing in SUMS?

Not at all! Anyone can join, as long as you sign up for a USU (University of Sydney Union) membership.

When are rehearsals?

Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:30pm on campus. Subscribe our calendar or join our mailing list to keep updated on the exact location each semester.

Can I join part-way through the semester?

We usually close official signups for performances around Week 4, but you’re always welcome to come along and sing for fun — or just watch a rehearsal!

How much does membership cost?

In order to hire a professional conductor/musical director and accompanist, we require fees for membership. However we will always allow you to join a couple of rehearsals to try us out before committing to membership. Fresher (student / staff and new member) fee is only $5. Please check out our join page for more membership info.

Have more questions?

If you have any further questions, please feel free to send us a message or email. Our committee members will be happy to assist you!

SUMS acknowledges and pays respect to the traditional owners of the land on which we meet (the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation). It is upon their ancestral lands that the University of Sydney is built. As we share our own knowledge, teaching, learning, and research practices within this University may we also pay respect to the knowledge embedded forever within the Aboriginal Custodianship of Country.
