Joining SUMS

Singing with us

The Sydney University Musical Society (SUMS) is a non-auditioned choir — that means everyone is welcome. Whether you’ve sung in choirs your whole life, or you’ve only ever sung in the shower, we’d love to have you!

Rehearsal

We rehearse every Wednesday evening from 6:30–8:30pm during semester. If you’d like to perform in our end-of-semester concert, we ask that you attend rehearsals regularly. But even if you’re not ready to perform, you’re more than welcome to sing with us just for the joy of it!

Social events

In addition to singing, we hold fun social events all year round — from BBQs and trivia nights to pub after rehearsal, choir camp and our annual Academic Dinner.

When can I join?

While Week 4 is usually the cut-off for performing in the concert (to ensure everyone gets enough rehearsal time), we always welcome new faces throughout the semester. If you’re joining later, you may not be able to perform — but you can still attend rehearsals, sing, and become part of the SUMS community! Performance eligibility can vary each semester, so feel free to reach out to our Concert Manager or committee to find out more.

How to join

You can join us at any Welcome Event or simply show up to a rehearsal!
If you love it and want to stay, just follow these 3 easy steps:

1. Get a USU Membership

All members need a valid USU membership (free for USYD students).

2.  Join SUMS on the USU Website

Log into your USU account at usu.edu.au

→ Search for “SUMS Choir”

→ Hit Join (this also helps us get funding!)

3. Fill Out Our Membership Form

Let us know you’re here and help us keep in touch with you.

Membership Fees

To help us hire a professional Musical Director and accompanist, we charge a small annual membership fee. Don’t worry — you’re welcome to try a couple of rehearsals for free before deciding!

*Membership lasts until the end of the year, and prices are lower if you’re joining in Semester 2.

SUMS acknowledges and pays respect to the traditional owners of the land on which we meet (the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation). It is upon their ancestral lands that the University of Sydney is built. As we share our own knowledge, teaching, learning, and research practices within this University may we also pay respect to the knowledge embedded forever within the Aboriginal Custodianship of Country.
